Microneedling— how does it work?

Microneedling— how does it work?

A question I’ve been asked many times over the past year is, “how can microneedling help with skin goals?” Well, let’s chat about that!

Firstly, I want to explain what microneedling is. It’s a modality wherein a high-velocity device (similar to a tattoo machine) with a needle tip is glided across the surface of the skin to create micro-punctures at a controlled depth. Now, that’s not to say these needles reach the same depth as a tattoo machine— they do not. Rather, these tips set at a more shallow puncture create a controlled micro-injury, thusly signaling to the body to send in reinforcements for healing.

The chain reaction one experiences is that of collagen remodeling, superficial resurfacing, oxygenation, & better product penetration. In lamens terms: smoother, clearer, brighter, & firmer skin. Who doesn’t want that? While some contraindications exist, most everyone is an eligible candidate for microneedling. Yes, even acne & rosacea clients!

What clients will want to bear in mind before booking that appointment are these simple facts:

  1. While a single session can be effective, a series of 3-6 is recommended, dependent upon the desired outcome. For example, atrophic scarring requires a consistent remodeling of collagen to fill out the deep indents in the skin. This gradual building of fibers ensures beautiful, lasting results.

  2. Proper preparation is a MUST. For this reason, consultation is mandatory to assess the skin’s health, set a realistic timeline, & apply the appropriate routines for optimal results.

  3. Consistency is key. When a treatment plan is drawn, adjustments can be made to accommodate changes in the skin, of course. However, too long between sessions will have a client back to square 1 & feeling robbed at no fault of the esthetician. Stick to the plan!

At Skin & Bare It, microneedling is performed with the SkinPen Precision Elite. This device is FDA cleared with more than 90 validation studies completed to assure safety & efficacy. During a session, the client will receive a thorough cleanse & gentle exfoliation, followed by numbing with a 5% topical lidocaine cream. Once fully numbed, a glide gel is applied to the face & microneedling will begin with tailored attention to the client’s goals. This only takes about 15 minutes total; some pinpoint bleeding & erythema are to be expected. Once complete, postcare product is applied & the client will get a take-home kit with aftercare instructions. Voila! This process is repeated up to 6 times with 4 weeks between treatments. Once desired results are achieved, a standalone maintenance session may be scheduled once every 3-6 months.

Whether your concern is acne, scarring, age spots, melasma, rosacea, wrinkles, or dull skin, microneedling is the treatment everyone can benefit from! And no one need ever fret that they’re getting a uniform treatment plan— everybody’s skin is unique, so your road to results is, too.

As always, please remember: I don’t create beauty; I reveal it!
